The ancient village revolves around the splendid Church of St. Andrea, that was built around 1222. Its interior cherishes precious paintings of great value, that were realized between the XV and the XVIII century, as well as splendid sculptures and a famous fifteenth-century wooden crucifix.
The city's best-preserved medieval building is the so-called Loggia, that was built in the XIII century in the centre of the homonymous square. The building, that was declared "monument of culture and peace" by UNESCO, was erected along the banks of an ancient canal-harbour. It is embellished by splendid brick vaults surmounted by segmental arches.
The ancient Medieval Village, that was commissioned in the XIII century by the members of the powerful Malaspina Family, rises on the top of a sweet hill overlooking the sea. This impressive fortress is surrounded by four high bulwarks and a circular tower, and was once encircled by imposing medieval walls (1265) that can still be seen.
Not to be missed is the Museum of the Material Culture, that is hosted inside an ancient historical building dating back to the XIV century. This interesting permanent exhibition illustrates the major rural traditions of the ancient Levanto.
