Lequile is situated just in the heart of the karst Salentine Peninsula, the so-called Cupa Valley, which extends west of the provincial capital. The rapid demographic development experienced by the surrounding area resulted in the merging of this municipality with the small nearby hamlet of Dragoni.

One of the Lequile's most representative sacred buildings is the Church of St. Vito, which is named after the city's patron saint and was erected between 1661 and 1670. This enchanting Baroque building boasts an elegant facade which is embellished by a beautiful projecting cornice that divides the two orders, and   is surmounted by an impressive ceramic covered dome.
The city's main square gathers the impressive remains of the XIV-century Castle of d'Enghien, and is dominated by the prestigious Palazzo dei Saluzzo. The upper floor of this sumptuous building, which was enlarged in the first half of the XVII century, is occupied by a small oratory and by a precious private book collection, while the lower floor hosts a small chapel dedicated to St. Giorgio.
The most representative landmark of Lequile's rural tradition is its famous Hypogean Oil Press, which was built between the XVI and the XVII century. This impressive underground complex still retains ancient mills and the remains of the tunnel which once connected the road with the oil press.
