Leporano, a small municipality situated in the province of Taranto, is idyllically set just in the heart of a low plateau which rises few kilometres far from the most famous seaside resorts of the Ionian coastline. The old town develops around the monumental Muscettola Castle, which was built in the seventeenth century and boasts a quadrangular plan. The portion which overlooks the coast is dominated by cylindrical towers, impressive buttresses and imposing bulwarks, while the north-eastern section is commanded by a square tower which was built to suit defensive purposes.
The city's Major Church, which is dedicated to Blessed Virgin Mary, was rebuilt in 1743 over the remains of a pre-existing church which was destroyed by a severe earthquake. This monumental building, which is made up of a nave and  two aisles, cherishes a precious wooden statue depicting St. Emidio, the city's patron saint, which dates back to 1750.
Marina di Leporano's promontory is topped by Saturo Tower, an imposing Spanish fortress which was built in 1569. The tower is now part of Saturo Archaeological Park, an important site which gathers precious finds and remains of great value, such as the ruins of a monumental Roman Villa which was built between the III and IV century A.D.
