Laterina, a small municipality situated 17 kilometres far from Arezzo, rises 240 metres above sea level just in the heart of the sweet hills of Valdarno Superiore. Part of its territory is included in the Natural Reserve of Valle dell’Inferno and Bandella, a traditional holiday destination for the lovers of nature and birdwatching.

The ancient village, which is still encircled by the original walls and abounds in historic-artistic evidences of great value, gives those flocking to Laterina all year round the possibility to spend pleasant holidays here. The ancient village is dominated by the high neo-Gothic bell tower of the parish church and is scattered with plenty of impressive medieval remains, such as whole sections of the city walls built of sandstone ashlars and stones from the river Arno, large portions of the main entrance gates, such as Porta Fredda, and the Fortress. Leaving the fortress behind and walking down Corso Italia, the city's major arterial route, it is possible to reach Porta Fiorentina and St. Rocco Cultural Centre, the latter being a large exhibition space often staging amazing shows and events which was built over the remains of a pre-existing church. A large public park situated outside Porta Fiorentina and the beautiful scenic route which flanks the city walls offer sweeping views of Valdarno and the so-called Balze valdarnesi.
The ancient village is crowned by the church of SS. Ippolito and Cassiano, whose outstanding fifteenth-century mosaics, paitings and frescos embellish both the interiors and the outer walls.
Via Vecchia Aretina leads tourists to Villa di Monsoglio and Villa dell’Isola, splendid private residences gathering artistic patterns of great value.
Every year at the end of July the amazing Medieval Festival is held here. During the three-day-long celebrations the whole village is livened up by plenty of exciting shows and events.
