Visiting Lanciano

Lanciano, a thriving municipality of the province of Chieti, is situated halfway between Vasto and Pescara. The municipal territory, which extends on the slopes of the Majella, is mostly characterized by sweet hills, but also includes the large plain of val di Sangro.

Lanciano gathers a remarkably wide array of accommodation facilities belonging to different categories. The local guest houses are able to suit even the most demanding requirements of different kinds of tourists, and so are Lanciano's hotels, which are distributed halfway between the city centre and the nearby hills. Lanciano's hills are punctuated with charming farmhouses, which give guests the possibility to taste genuine regional specialities. The city centre is scattered with intimate bed and breakfasts, while the scenic routes which lead to the surrounding mountains are peppered with small and welcoming shelters.

Situated a short distance from both the sea and the mountains, Lanciano attracts large numbers of tourists both during summer and in winter. In the summertime, tourists are attracted by the lively seaside resorts of the surrounding area, which gather well-groomed bathing establishments and compelling beaches and give tourists the possibility to enjoy the utmost rest and relax. The lovers of nature and mountain landscapes will have the opportunity to perform different kinds of both sports and outdoor activities.
Lanciano's old town is scattered with ancient palaces, impressive monuments and fascinating spots, and boasts breathtaking views over the underlying landscapes. The famous Torri Montanare bear witness to the previous existence of impressive city walls, which were built towards the end of the X century. Another important historical sight is Porta S. Biagio, the only gate to the city (out of the nine entrances which characterized the ancient village) which still retains its original aspect. Not to be missed is Diocletian Bridge, whose original structure dates back to the III century A.D. Over the course of the centuries, it has repeatedly been remodelled, and part of it was integrated into the Basilica of Madonna del Ponte. This church was subsequently restored, and it is now an important example of the Neoclassical architectural style, after the last restoration which took place in the nineteenth century.
Lanciano is also scattered with plenty of medieval civic and sacred buildings, such as the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, which was built in 1227 and subsequently renovated to regain its original fascination.
