Visiting Jesi

Jesi is a small municipality of the province of Ancona. It is idyllically set amidts the sweet hills of the lower vally of the river Esino, just behind the thriving resort of Falconara Marittima, and is situated 20 kilometres far from the Adriatic Coast and 30 kilometres far from the provincial capital. Jesi boasts ancient origins: it was the last stronghold of the Umbri, was subsequently taken over by the Gauls and became a Roman colony in 247 B.C. The typical town layout of the Roman Castrum romano can easily been recognized in Jesi's old town.

Jesi is a privileged holiday destination for both the lovers of cultural tourism, who are interested in exploring its precious historic-artistic heritage, and gourmets, who will have the possibility to taste the fine Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi wine, as well as local honey, salami and cold pork meat, oil and cheeses. The city gathers a remarkably wide array of accommodation options which are able to suit even the most demanding requirements of different kinds of tourists. Jesi's hotels and guest houses, which are situated just in the heart of the old town, give guests the possibility to reach the city's major attractions and highlights in a very short time, while the local charming bed and breakfasts make the ideal base for those interested in visiting the famous Jesi's Castles. The city's intimate farm houses, which are surrounded by lush landscapes and sweet rolling hills, are the ideal accommodation facilities for the lovers of nature and food and wine itineraries.

Jesi's old town bears witness to the perfect integration of the different architectural styles and town layouts which have developed over the course of the centuries. The picturesque narrow streets which depart from Piazza Federico II correspond to the ancient Roman Forum. The city's well-preserved walls and sumptuous palaces testify to the thriving artistic period the city experienced during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Both the Municipal Palace, which was sumptuously frescoed and decorated in the course of the eighteenth century, and Palazzo della Signoria, which was designed by the illustrious architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini and is now the seat of the Municipal Library and the precious Pianetti book archive, date back to the same period. One of the city's most representative sacred buildings is the Church of St. Nicolò, which is Jesi's oldest structure. It was erected according to the canons of the Romanesque style earlier than the XII century, and is now the seat of the city's exhibition hall. Not to be missed are the nearby Sanctuary of Madonna delle Grazie, the Church of St. John the Baptist, which was subsequently remodelled in a Baroque style, and the wonderful XII-century Church of San Marco, which rises on the top of a sweet hill overlooking Jesi's old town.
Jesi's civic picture gallery cherishes precious artworks of great value, such as wonderful paintings which were realized by Lorenzo Lotto for the most important local noble families. The exhibition also gathers outstanding works by internationally renowned contemporary artists.
Jesi experienced another golden period during the eighteenth century, since the famous musician Giovanni Battista Pergolesi was born here in 1710: the famous Theatre of Piazza della Repubblica is named after this illustrious citizen. Piazza Federico II gathers wonderful Neoclassical buildings of great value, such as the Duomo, Palazzo Ripanti and Palazzo Balleani, the latter being the seat of the Jesi's section of the Wine Shop of the Marches. The fifteenth-century cellars of the palace gather more than 400 excellent DOC, DOCG, and IGT wines from the Marches.
The lovers of naturalistic itineraries won't miss the opportunity to visit Ripa Bianca Natural Reserve, which develops along the banks of the river Esino, and is crossed by fascinating footpaths, streams, lakes, rural areas and an enchanting WWF oasis.
