Situated north of the mouth of the river Tesino, in the province of Ascoli Piceno, the small municipality of Grottammare develops just in the heart of the so-called Riviera of the Palm Trees. A city of ancient origins, this cosy seaside resort is embellished by exotic palm trees, splendid oleanders and scented orange groves.

The city's enchanting sea front gathers welcoming guest houses, which give guests the possibility to reach the beach in a very short time. After the visit of the city's picturesque medieval village, tourists should head to the majestic Church of St. Lucia. The current structure of the church, which is different from the original project conceived by the papal architect Domenico Fontana who started construction works in 1590, boasts a sumptuous brick facade, which is surmounted by a ribbed bell tower and embellished by precious decorations. The interior, which has Greek cross and square plan, cherishes precious paintings, fine altars and a splendid organ dating back to 1752.
The Church of St. Maria ai Monti, which rises on the top of the local hill, is surrounded by an important archaeological area. It cherishes the fragment of a precious fresco depicting the Madonna and Child.
The steep slope which connects the sea front with the ancient village is dominated by the Church of St. Agostino. Its sober outer structure was largely built of bricks of various shapes and sizes. The beautiful complex is complemented by an enchanting quadrangular cloister. 
Not to be missed is the Church of St. Martino, which rises in the homonymous hamlet. It is one of the most ancient sacred buildings of the whole province, and is said to have been built over the remains of a temple which was dedicated to the Goddess Cupra. Its sober facade boasts simple lines and a beautiful central rose window. The interior, which has one nave and two aisles, still retains a XII – XIII-century fresco and a sixteenth-century crucifix.
Grottammare's surrounding territory is also home to some splendid villas, such as Villa Azzolino and Villa Matricardi, the latter being built according to the canons of the Art-Nouveau architectural style. Not to be missed is the circular Tower of the Battle, which has recently been renovated and is now the seat of an interesting museum.
