This is Gravedona's original core, the place where this charming municipality developed around the ancient parish church of St. Vincenzo. Together with the nearby villages of Dongo and Sorico, Gravedona's was part of the so-called Tre Pievi settlement.
The ancient Via Regina, which was built by the Romans, is Gravedona's major arterial route. It is flanked by picturesque medieval houses and a breathtaking lookout point which overlooks the lake. Apart from the ancient church of St. Vincenzo, not to be missed are the church of St. Maria del Tiglio, the church of Madonna della Soledad, which is idyllically set just in the heart of the lakeside promenade, the church of St. Gusmeo and Matteo, which was frescoed in the early seventeenth century and the church of Santa Croce, which is situated in the lovely hamlet of Naro. It was completely frescoed by Sigismondo de Magistris in the sixteenth century. Those reaching Gravedona by boat will have the possibility to admire the square and massive profile of Palazzo Gallio, a former cardinal's residence which was erected in the late sixteenth century. It rises along the shores of the lake and is encircled by a lush garden which is covered with thick camellia trees.
Gravedona is also peppered with small workshops, sports facilities and beauty centres which attract large numbers of visitors. Boat excursions and long walks along the footpaths which cross the valley of the river Liro are the best ways to enjoy the extraordinary natural heritage of Gravedona itself and the surrounding area.
