Gratteri is idyllically set just in the heart of a privileged area that is totally surrounded by the impressive peaks and gentle slopes of Pizzo Dipilo, that is one of the highest mountains of Madonie Massif. The old town still retains its original historical look, and gathers splendid palaces and buildings that boast breathtaking views over fascinating natural settings. The city's major churches are the medieval Matrice Vecchia and the Church of St. Maria di Gesù. Not to be missed is the splendid nineteenth-century Major Church dedicated to St. Michele Arcangelo, that cherishes four holy thorns from Christ's crown. The small Church of Crocifisso boasts breathtaking views over the underlying San Giorgio Valley, that is largely occupied by the ruins of an ancient abbey.
Gratteri's major attraction is its enchanting nature. The famous Grattara Cave is situated less than one kilometre far from the city centre. Surrounded by impressive mountains, it cherishes a millenary crater formed by water. The Regional Park of Madonie is crossed by fascinating trekking, mountain-biking and horse-riding itineraries. The nearby mountain resort of Piano Battaglia gathers lush meadows, excellent ski slopes and modern ski-lift facilities.
