Gela is regarded to be one of the most important cultural, archaeological and historical centres of the Mediterranean Basin. It is home to three famous archaeological sites. The city's Acropolis rises on the top of a sweet hill that is peppered with the precious remains of an ancient Doric temple. The Greek fortifications of Caposoprano, that are also known as Mura Timoleonte, are an outstanding example of an ancient military architecture, and are surrounded by 300 metres of impressive walls. The so-called Bosco Littorio area gathers precious remains belonging to the first Greek settlements of the region, such as ancient brick houses and floors.
Not to be missed is Castelluccio, a sumptuosu manor house that gazes across the coastline from on high. The elegant palaces and buildings of Vecchia Gela were all built according to the typical canons of the Art-Nouveau architectural style.
