Gallarate, an important municipality of the province of Varese, develops just in the heart of Basso Varesotto plain. Its territory is included in the Lombard Park of the river Ticino, and is crossed by the stream Arno.

The Basilica is flanked by a 45-metre-high bell tower.
The Romanesque-Gothic Church of St. Pietro, Gallarate's most representative building, is situated just in the heart of the city centre. Its interior cherishes a precious Baroque altar embellished by wonderful polychrome marbles and beautiful Corinthian capitals. Its facade is embellished by small suspended arches, columns and pilasters, and it is faced by a small loggia. The so-called Crocetta, that is locally known as “Cruzeta”, is an important monument composed of a simulacrum of Madonna del Pilar and an iron cross.
Another religious site worthy of mention is the seventeenth-century Sanctuary of Madonna in Campagna, that contains a precious high altar and numerous paintings of great value. The city's Museum of History and Art was erected over the remains of the ancient monastery of St. Francesco. Gallarate is also home to the famous Aloisianum cultural centre, that is often the venue for technical and scientific congresses, displays and exhibitions.
