Visiting Galatina
Galatina is a large municipality situated in the hinterland of Lecce, just in the heart of the Salentine Peninsula and halfway between the Ionian Coast and the Adriatic Riviera. Outstanding monuments and works of art bear witness to the glorious vicissitudes experienced by this lovely city, which is the ideal holiday destination for large numbers of cultural tourists coming from all over Italy and abroad.
Galatina gathers a remarkably wide array of comfortable accommodation facilities, such as the hotels belonging to any price category which are situated a short distance from the city's major attractions and highlights. Local guesthouses are characterized by modern services and comfortable spaces, while those looking for utmost privacy and intimacy can stay at the bed and breakfasts of the city centre or at fascinating holiday farms which are hosted inside elegant manor houses.
One of the city's most ancient monuments is the church of St. Caterina d’Alessandria, which is Galatina's most representative landmark and has recently been appointed national monument. Commissioned in 1391 by prince Raimondello, who is buried in the apse of the church together with his son, the church of St. Caterina is one of the few examples of Gothic art in the Salentine Peninsula. Note the fifteenth-century frescoes by Francesco d’Arezzo and the precious paintings which embellish the interiors.
Other sacred buildings worthy of mention are the Church dedicated to the saints Pietro and Paolo, which was realized in the Baroque style and is embellished by rich inner and outer decorations, the church of St. Paolo, a small building which was once used to treat those affected with tarantism, and the contemporary church of St. Sebastiano, which is situated just in the heart of the city's new residential area.
Both the city's walls and entrance gates, some of which still retain their original aspect, date back to the sixteenth century, the period when the city experienced utmost cultural liveliness under the rule of the Castriota Family. The remains of the ducal castle of the Castriota Family overlook Piazza Aligheri.
The central Municipal Villa is surrounded by a large garden gathering lush palm trees and outstanding fountains and monuments. One of Galatina's most important event is the Trade Fair which takes place in June in the city's modern exhibition centre. During summer, plenty of cultural events and food and wine festivals dedicated to the tastiest local staples, such as the famous DOC wines, liven up the city centre and attract large numbers of visitors.
