Visiting Fossacesia

Fossacesia is a famous seaside resort of the province of Chieti. The city centre rises on the top of a sweet hill which is situated 2 kilometres far from the coast, while the small hamlet of Fossacesia Marina develops along the sea front and around the charming Golfo di Venere cove, which is characterized by compelling shingle beaches. The northern coastline is marked by the rocky Punta Cavalluccio, while the mounth of the river Sangro is peppered with alluring beaches and sandy dunes.

Fossacesia gathers a dazzling array of modern hotels which are able to host large numbers of both tourists and visitors. It also hosts numerous residences, which are situated a short distance from the beach, and intimate inns, which concentrate in the nearby hamlet of Fossacesia Marina. The city centre is peppered with comfortable guest houses belonging to every price category, while the old town is scattered with intimate bed and breakfasts, which boast breathatking views over the underlying Adriatic Coast.

Fossacesia's major monument and most important pilgrim destination for religious tourists from all over the world is the Abbey of St. Giovanni in Venere. The current complex dates back to the XII century, but it was erected over the remains of the former Benedictine Monastery around which the community of Fossacesia developed three centuries before. The same territory was previously occupied by a Roman temple dedicated to Venere Conciliatrice, which was destroyed by the Cistercian Friars who settled here after the VI century. The monumental stone and marble basilica contains precious thirteenth-century frescoes, while its crypt cherishes the remains of the former Roman temple. The monastery was remodelled in the Renaissance period, and only few sectors retain their original aspect.
Other ancient sacred buildings worthy of mention are the church of Santa Maria delle Grotte, which was built in the thirteenth century, and the XI-century church of St. Silvestro, which is situated in the nearby hamlet of Villa Scorciosa.
The sweet surrounding hills are crossed by charming paths and naturalistic itineraries, which can be covered both on foot and by mountain bike and give tourists the possibility to admire impressive scenery and unspoiled landscapes. Not to be missed are the ancient villas of the surrounding area, such as Palazzo Contini and Palazzo Mayer.
Fossacesia Marina's most peculiar buildings are the so-called trabocchi, the ancient wooden stilts which were once inhabited by fishermen. They are mostly situated in the northern part of the city, a short distance from Punta Cavalluccio, and dominate the popular beach which is also known as Trabocchi Coast.
