Visiting Formello
Formello is a small municipality situated north east of Rome. Its territory is included in the metropolitan area of the capital and is part of Veio's Regional Park. The ancient Etruscan city of Veio is scattered with precious finds and evidences which are now hosted inside the Civic Archaeological Museum of Agro Veientano.
The historic and artistic evidences cherished by the fortified village of Formello attract large numbers of cultural tourists. Formello gathers a remarkably wide array of accommodation options, such as hotels situated in the old town, comfortable guesthouses, intimate bed and breakfasts and charming holiday farms situated outside the city walls.
Porta da Capo and Porta da Piedi are the main entrance gates to the village of Formello, which was fortified in the XI century. The two gates are connected with the city's major arterial route, Via XX Settembre, which is dominated by the Church of St. Michele Arcangelo and flanked by the small square of San Lorenzo, the latter being crowned by the homonymous church and Palazzo Chigi. Palazzo Chigi is named after the noble family from Siena which took over Formello's feud in the seventeenth century. The building, which was probably erected in the XI century and subsequently remodelled by the Orsini and Chigi families, is now the seat of the Civic Archaeological Museum of Agro Veientano. The nearby church of St. Lorenzo, which dates back to the same period, cherishes precious frescos dating back to 1570 which were attributed to Donato Palmieri.
Outside the city walls are further important buildings, such as Villa Chigi-Versaglia, a seventeenth-century building which is almost completely ruined but still retains the so-called Torre Colombaia, an impressive three-storey square building.
Excursionists won't miss the opportunity to reach the nearby Valle del Sorbo, which is part of Veio's Park, a fascinating chequerboard of sweet hills and enchanting valleys. The river Cremera, which crosses Valle del Sorbo and also features some picturesque waterfalls, marks the watershed between Formello and Campagnano di Roma. The river is flanked by the ancient Mill and the Sanctuary of Sorbo, both of which are almost completely ruined.
Not to be missed is the antiques exhibition which takes place one Sunday a month, and the festival of the patron saint Saint Lorenzo, which is celebrated on August 10.
