Ficulle's hotels, that are surrounded by lush vegetation and boast breathtaking views over the surrounding landscapes, boast intimate atmosphere and excellent price-quality relationship. Not to be missed are the charming guest houses of the old town and the city's intimate farm houses, that give guests the possibility to taste excellent local staples from the surrounding area, as well as to undertake pleasant trekking and cycling tours amidst the city's glorious landscapes.
Ficulle was founded in ancient times, but became especially important during the Romagn Age, since it was situated just in the heart of a strategic area overlooking the important Via Traiana. In the Middle Ages, the city centre became a scene of fierce fighting and feudal wars, and impressive walls and fortresses were erected in the XIII century to protect the city against enemy attack. Not to be missed is the Parish Church of St. Maria Vecchia, that is embellished by a splendid Gothic portal and by wonderful fifteenth-century frescoes. Its interior hosts an important marble memorial stone dedicated to the god Mitra.
Another important medieval monument worthy of mention is Castel Maggiore, that ca be reached through a picturesque climb that develops amidst narrow streets, intimate squares, steep staircases and lovely houses.
A short distance from Ficulle is the wonderful footpath that crosses the wood and leads up to the Church of St. Nicolò al Monte Orvietano, that was erected in 1007. 5 kilometres far from the city centre is the imposing Castello della Sala, that was erected in the XII century and is now the seat of an important wine-growing and producing activity.
The most representative items and handicrafts from the surrounding area are the so-called “cocce”, that is to say jugs, dishes and plenty of other earthenware objects. Gourmets won't miss the possibility to taste one of the best extra-virgin olive oils in Italy, that is still produced according to ancient traditions.
