Visiting Fenis
Fenis is a small municipality of Val d’Aosta situated only 13 kilometres far from the regional capital Aosta. Fenis' city centre overlooks the largest valley of the surrounding area, while picturesque hamlets are idyllically set amongst enchanting settings and Clavalité Valley, the latter being situated at the very edge of the region. Fenis' old town is crowned by a thick wood which contributes to give the village utmost profusion.
Welcoming accommodation facilities and hotels are situated both in the old town and across the surrounding hamlets, while intimate holiday farms and shelters are located in privileged panoramic positions overlooking the underlying valley. Many guesthouses are provided with restaurant serving tasty traditional specialities, while intimate bed and breakfasts are the ideal solution for those looking for pleasant holidays at reasonable prices.
A real paradise for the lovers of excursions and trekking, Fenis gathers a thick network of fascinating footpaths and mule tracks leading to the nearby massives, lakes, woods and lookout points overlooking Clavalité Valley. Not to be missed are well-equipped sports centres, the local rafting club, targeted associations dealing with the organization of exciting mountain bike excursions, climbing clubs and an historical ski club provided with a ski school for both children and beginners.
Apart from performing sports activities, those flocking to Fenis will have the opportunity to visit the ancient Castle of Chez-Sapin, situated on the slopes of Mount Saint Julien. This mysterious building is regarded to be one of the most beautiful medieval structures of Val d’Aosta, as well as one of the major tourist attractions of the surrounding area. The building was taken over by the Challant family, the viscounts of Aosta, in the XIII century; the most representative landmarks of the outer structure are numerous impressive towers which give the building a fairy-tale fascination. The halls of the castle are open to the general public, who will have the possibility to admire the precious fifteenth-century frescoes which ornate the elegant interiors. Apart from the Castle, not to be missed are the fascinating chapels, churches and oratories which were realized between 1400 and 1700.
