Together with Pompei and Oplontis, Ercolano, which is famous all over the world for its outstanding archaeological sites, was included in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List. It is situated just in front of the Gulf of Naples, and nestles on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius halfway between Portici and Torre del Greco. Up to some decades ago, it was still called Resina, but in 1969 it was dubbed Ercolano in order to pay homage to the ancient Roman city.

Together with Pompei, Ercolano is the largest open-air archaeological site that bears witness to the disappearance of the Romans. Today, the houses and structures of the modern part of the city prevent researchers to unearth further remains dating back to two thousand years ago.
The ancient Ercolano disappeared because of the volcanic eruption of 79 A. D., and was buried under a thick layer of volcanic material and mud in the space of a single night. During the first years of the eighteenth century excavation works began, and precious finds and remains were unearthed. From that moment on, the city started attracting large numbers of students, aristocrats and rich people from all over the world.
Walking down the streets of Ercolano, visitors will have the opportunity to make an outstanding virtual journey across time. They will have the opportunity to admire ancient houses, doors, walls, floors, frescoes and mosaics, as well as to visit the famous Villa dei Papiri, which still retains 1826 papyrus rolls containing precious Greek play and outstanding statues and decorations. Villa dei Papiri was not completely unearthed, and part of it still lies under the modern part of the city.
In the past, the departure point to visit Ercolano was its ancient Theatre. Today, visitors can make a specific tour across the local spas, skeleton house, mosaic house, wooden house, alcova house and all other structures of the city.
