Visiting Erba
The small town of Erba, which boasts ancient pre-Roman origins, is situated in the province of Como and is idyllically set on the slopes of the Lombard Prealps of Brianza. Its proximity with Lakes Alserio and Pusiano makes its territory particularly fascinating.
Comfortable hotels provided with beauty centre rise amidst naturalistic oases of rare beauty and important archeological sites, and give guests the possibility to enjoy utmost rest and relax. The old town is scattered with charming guest houses, which give guests the possibility to admire the underlying landscape which is punctuated with impressive architectural structures dating back to the Middle Ages. Intimate bed and breakfasts and farmhouses, which are situated a short distance from the city's major attractions and highlights, give guests the possibility to take advantage of high-quality services and facilities at reasonable prices.
Piazza Sant’Eufemia cherishes one of the most ancient Romanesque parish churches of the whole province, the church of St. Eufemia di Incino. This XI-XII-century Romanesque building was erected over the remains of an early Christian structure dating back to the V century. Over the course of the centuries, it has undergone substantial renovation works, such as the enlargement of the nave up to the Romanesque bell tower, which was carried out in the sixteenth century. One of its chapels cherishes an ancient fresco depicting the Virgin Mary. One of the most representative works of art it cherishes is a big wooden crucifix which was painted according to the traditional Giotto-style in the XVI century. Not to be missed are the fifteenth-century frescos which are hosted inside the oratory which is named after St. Bernardino.
Carpesino, a picturesque medieval village which is situated just in the heart of Erba's plain, hosts the church - oratory of the Magi, which boasts an impressive granite portal, the original terracotta-tiled floor and sumptuous frescos. Crevenna is home to the church of St. Maria degli Angeli, which is the only surviving section of the former Franciscan monastery, which was then replaced by Villa Amalia between 1700 and 1800 by Leopoldo Pollack. Among the most popular guests of the prestigious Villa Amalia, not to be missed are Monti, Foscolo and Parini. The lovers of nature will have the possibility to visit the so-called Buco del Piombo (Hole of the Lead), an impressive natural cave which is part of an imposing karstic complex.
