Visiting Dozza
Dozza, a small municipality of the province of Bologna, is situated few kilometres south of the ancient Via Aemilia, and is surrounded by Imola's gentle hilly landscape. This lovely medieval village, that is also known as “Dozza imolese”, is crossed by the main tributaries of the stream Sillaro, whose course marks the watershed between Emilia and Romagna.
The welcoming hotels of Dozza's old town are all furnished with style, and are provided with comfortable bedrooms and excellent services and facilities. The local family-run guest houses make the ideal base for undertaking exciting excursions across the major naturalistic and artistic beauties of the region. Those interested in spending pleasant holidays here based on the utmost rest and relax won't miss the opportunity to stay at the city's charming farm houses, that boast sweeping views over the lush surrounding landscapes.
Dozza's most representative landmark is its enchanting Medieval Village, that rises on the top of the city's highest hill and is wholly encircled by imposing walls. Although retaining some important medieval elements, the town layout is currently characterized by the presence of over hundred murals, that embellish the facades of local houses and palaces thus contributing to increase the city's charm and fascination.
The village can be entered through two gates, that were made out of two pre-existing fortified structures dating back to ‘300 and ‘400. They are Rivellino, that has a round plan and is partially buried, and Rocchetta, that was erected by people from Bologna in 1250 and is flanked by an imposing square tower.
Another building worthy of mention is the Church of St. Maria Assunta in Piscina, which was erected in the XII century over the remains of an ancient Romanesque church. Its interior cherishes precious artworks of great value, such as a Pietà in polychrome stucco and a beautiful XVI-century tabernacle attributed to Formigine.
The old town is dominated by the imposing Sforza Fortress, that was built in 1250 in the municipality of Bologna and then completely re-built at the end of the XV century under Caterina Sforza. The complex, that was turned into the residence of Malvezzi-Campeggi Family in ‘500, still retains its original fascination and medieval structure. Its interior contains plenty of instruments and tools dating back to 1500, as well as precious eighteenth-century paintings and tapestries.
