Deiva Marina, a small municipality of the province of La Spezia, develops north of Cinque Terre Park, and extends across the lush valley of the rivers Deiva and Castagnola. The old town revolves around the eighteenth-century Church of St. Antonio Abate, the city's patron saint. The outer structure of the parish church is complemented by a splendid “risseau” church square, a kind of colourful mosaic depicting seafaring subjects, while the interior cherishes a precious organ dating back to 1848 and a splendid pulpit that was largely made of polychrome marble.
In front of the church is the high Saracen Tower, a square-shaped late-medieval watch tower that, together with the adjoining circular tower, once suited defensive purposes and protected the city against pirate attacks.
The lovely hamlet of Mezzema hosts the Parish Church of St. Michele Arcangelo, that was built between the VII and the VIII century and was even mentioned in a certificate belonging to Charlemagne in 774. It still retains an important wooden statue depicting the Saint that was realized by the acclaimed sculptor from Genoa Anton Maria Maragliano.
The lovers of excursionism will have the possibility to undertake exciting tours across the lush landscapes of the surrounding area, where the typical Mediterranean scrub of the coastline is dramatically offset by the thick woods of holm-oaks, conifers and coark-oaks of Bracco Pass.
