Cogorno, a small municipality of the province of Genoa, extends just in the heart of the valley of the stream Entella. The lovers of history and art won't miss the opportunity to visit the Basilica of Fieschi, that is situated just in the heart of the ancient village of San Salvatore. This sacred building, that is one of the most prestigious and best preserved churches in Liguria, was commissioned by Popes Innocent IV and Hadrian V, and then built according to the canons of the Gothic - Romanesque style between 1244 and 1252. The Basilica, that was included in the list of the major national monuments in 1860, boasts a sumptuous facade that was largely made of slate and white marble, as well as an imposing quadrangular bell tower surmounted by a spire. Not to be missed is the eighteenth-century Parish Church of St. Lorenzo, that is the city's patron saint. Its interior boasts a precious fifteenth-century bas relief and a polyptych from the same period, as well as the prestigious XIX-century wooden choir stalls of the apse.
One of city's most important civic buildings is Palazzo Comitale dei Fieschi, that rises in front of the Basilica.
The interior of Fieschi's complex, that was erected in the XIII century next to the ancient Via Franchigena, is now the seat of the "Cultural Centre of Fieschi Museum", that reconstructs the story of the noble family.
In summer, a peculiar celebration set during the Middle Ages, the so-called Addiu du Fantin, is arranged in the church square of the Basilica. This amazing event, that is usually held in the night of August 13, is livened up by a sumptuous medieval banquet and by funny balls and parades.
