Visiting Cogne

Cogne, the largest municipality of Valle d’Aosta, is situated south in the region, on the slopes of Gran Paradiso Massif. Cogne's territory is included in the protected areas of Gran Paradiso National Park, an enchanting natural oasis gathering wide pastures, thick woods, impressive peaks and perennial glaciers. Cogne's old town is surrounded by the so-called Prati di Sant’Orso, a large green meadow which crowns the whole village.

Situated 18 kilometres far from the regional capital Aosta, Cogne is one of the most appreciated tourist destinations of Val d’Aosta both in summer and in winter. Every year, the hotels of the old town and the guesthouses situated in the nearby hamlets of Val di Cogne attract large numbers of holidaymakers, sportsmen and mountain lovers.  Cogne's tourist offer is complemented by intimate shelters and comfortable residences.

Famous all over the world for its cross-country trails, Cogne has repeatedly hosted national and international competitions. Around the city centre, in the so-called Prati di Sant’Orso and the lovely hamlets of Lillaz, Épinel and Valnontey, are more than 80 kilometres of Nordic skiing slopes, while the lovers of Alpine skiing will have the possibility to take advantage of 3 modern ski-lift facilities leading to the nearby snow-covered slopes. Snowboarders will have the possibility to take advantage of a well-equipped snow park.
Among the most appreciated winter sports, not to be missed are climbing, which can be performed across over 150 popular iced waterfalls, charming excursions by horse- or dog-drawn sledges and snowshoeing.
During summer, Cogne's valley is a real paradise for the lovers of trekking, since it gathers rough footpaths and mule tracks which cross Gran Paradiso National Park. Cross-country trails turn into long mountain bike itineraries, while crystal-clear streams and Alpine lakes attract the lovers of kayaking and sports fishing. Further absorbing sports activities are golf, horse riding, tennis and bocce.
