Visiting Cles
Cles, a small municipality situated in the province of Trento and the capital of Val di Non district, is internationally renowned as an important rural centre revolving around the production of apples. For some decades, outstanding Alpine landscapes, impressive monuments and lively cultural activities have turned Cles into an appreciated holiday destination.
Over the last few years, many hotels and guesthouses have been built in order to welcome increasing numbers of tourists, and offer them utmost comfort and modern services and facilities. Not to be missed are comfortable residences and charming guesthouses situated a short distance from Lake Santa Giustina.
Lake Santa Giustina is an artificial basin which originated from the construction of the big dyke of the river Noce, which took place in 1951. The name derives from the ancient retreat of Santa Giustina, which is easily accessible following a rough path for about half an hour. The lake is dominated by Castel Cles, which once belonged to local lords and was built over the remains of an ancient Roman tower. Note the sumptuously frescoed rooms.
Heading towards the city centre, it is possible to reach the parish church dedicated to St. Maria Assunta, a monumental Gothic-Renaissance building which was realized at the beginning of the sixteenth century over the remains of a pre-existing church. Not to be missed is Palazzo Assessorile, whose interiors are ornated by precious Renaissance frescos, which is now the venue for interesting art exhibitions and cultural events. Pez district hosts the ancient church of St. Vigilio, which was erected around 991. Its interiors cherish precious frescos and paintings dating back to the fourteenth and fifteenth century. The convent and church of St. Antonio constitute a charming complex dating back to the seventeenth century. The inner rooms contain seventeenth- and eighteenth-century frescos and paintings of great value.
Not to be missed are the small hamlet of Dres, which offers sweeping views of the lake and hosts the fascinating church of St. Tommaso, which was founded around 1300, and the cosy village of Maiano, which is home to the ancient church of St. Pietro and Paolo. Inside are precious frescos and a wooden altar of great value.
Not to be missed are traditional specialities from Trentino, such as potato cakes, speck, polenta, strudel, mushrooms, game and apple pies. The local wine is groppello, even if the region is especially renowned for its production of white and aromatized grappa.
