Visiting Civitella Del Tronto

Civitella del Tronto, a small municipality of the province of Teramo, is idyllically set just in the heart of Val Vibrata, which extends along the northern side of Abruzzo, upon the boundary with the Marches. Founded as an important defensive bulwark of the Kingdom of Naples, it was the last city to be included in the Kingdom of Italy (1861). Civitella del Tronto is part of the mountain community of Monti della Laga, and has recently been included in the list of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

Hotels in Civitella del Tronto give guests the possibility to spend pleasant holidays amidst lush natural landscapes and the glorious countryside of the surrounding area. Teramo and the most popular seaside resorts of Abruzzo's coastline are situated only few metres far from it: this is the main reason why guest houses in Civitella are the ideal accommodation facilities for those interested in combining pleasant holidays at the seaside with the possibility to visit the most representative historical and artistic beauties of the city. The welcoming farm houses of the surrounding area give guests the possibility to experience a closer touch with nature while eating tasty traditional specialities from Abruzzo.

Civitella del Tronto's Fortress is one of the biggest military architectures in Italy. Its elliptical base is founded on the imposing travertine massif which supports the city, and covers a total surface of 25000 square metres. The first data concerning its foundation date back to 1255, even if the presence of a military structure on Civitella's hill had already been confirmed by some important  XI-century documents. Today the fortress, which was totally restored and remodelled by the Spanish in the XVI century, boasts a Renaissance aspect.
Further monuments worthy of note are the Parish Church of St. Lorenzo, which was erected in the XVI century and then subsequently restored in the eighteenth century according to the traditional architectural patterns of the Baroque style, the medieval churches of St. Francesco and St. Maria degli Angeli, and the sanctuary and convent of Santa Maria dei Lumi, which were erected in 1466.
The lovers of excursions won't miss the opportunity to visit the Abbey of St. Maria di Montesanto, which is one of the privileged religious destinations in Teramo. Legend has it that it was founded by St. Benedetto of Norcia in 542.
