Cetara is a small and ancient fishing village of the popular Amalfi Coast. Situated halfway between Erchie and Vietri, it rises a short distance from the most appreciated tourist resorts of the surrounding area, that is to say Maiori, Minori and Amalfi. Salerno is situated a very short distance from here too, and can be reached driving along the enchanting coastal road. Cetara is idyllically set just in the heart of a privileged position. Situated along the coastline, it is surrounded by a narrow rocky valley and dominated by the impressive profile of Mount Falerio. During the Roman period, a nearby inlet was home to the so-called cetarie, that is to say special fish farming and processing areas that gave the city its name.
The old town is dominated by the Church of St. Pietro and the adjoining thirteenth-century bell tower. Anyway, Cetara's major attractions are its enchanting beaches. The city's most representative landmarks are the so-called “Due Fratelli” (Two Brothers): two cone-shaped cliffs that are situated off of the coast in the direction of Vietri. The small hamlet of Punta di Fuenti hosts the remains of an ancient Roman pier.
Some beaches in Cetara can be reached by boat only, what makes them unspoiled oases of rare beauty. The most beautiful beaches, that make the ideal base for going for pleasant walks along the coast, are Due Fratelli, Torre Crestarella and Marina D’Albori. A short distance from Maiori are Spiaggia dei Limoni, Marina D’Erchie, which is dominated by the imposing Cerniola and Tummolo towers, and the panoramic promontory of Capo d’Orso.
