Centola, a small municipality situated in the province of Salerno, is an appreciated resort which is idyllically set just in the heart of Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park. Centola's territory includes the charming hamlet of Palinuro, which hosts some of the most important marine caves in Italy, and the pretty town of San Severino, an ancient medieval village which still retains its original fascination.

Centola's incredible variety of natural landscapes and wealth of historical finds attract thousands of tourists all year round. Those flocking to Centola during summer won't miss the opportunity to visit the 32 famous marine caves of Capo Palinuro, some of which are open to the general public and can be visited through targeted boat excursions. Capo Palinuro's harbour provides excellent connections with the spectacular Grotta Azzurra, Grotta d’Argento, Grotta dei Monaci and Grotta del Sangue. Some caves are open to expert researchers only, such as Sala della Neve, which is approached through a treacherous underwater passage, and Grotta delle Ossa.
Palinuro, whose city centre rises on the top of Capo Palinuro's promontory, boasts enchanting caves and a rich naturalistic heritage, as well as a remarkably wide array of well-groomed beaches. The so-called Metrò del Mare, a daily hydrofoil service, connects Palinuro with Naples and Salerno.
Not to be missed is the medieval village of San Severino, a small centre which was founded in 1200 around the Norman castle, which had in turn been built two centuries before. The village is crowned by the fascinating Gola del Diavolo (Gorge of Devil), a deep precipice which had been hollowed out by the waters of the river Mingardo. Those flocking to San Severino on the occasion of the Christmas holidays will have the possibility to attend the living crib, which livens up the almost uninhabited village on December 28.
