Visiting Ceglie Messapica
Ceglie Messapica, a small municipality of the province of Brindisi, extends across the final part of the Murge plateau, halfway between the upper Salentine plain and Itria Valley. The whole municipal territory is surrounded by the so-called soglia messanica karts depression, and it is characterized by the presence of ravines, water expanses, caves and subterranean waterways.
The lush Mediterranean scrub and ancient olive groves hide plenty of so-called “casedde”, which have recently been turned into comfortable hotels gathering well-kept bedrooms, modern beauty centres, large swimming pools and wide meeting rooms. Guest houses in Ceglie Messapica, which are situated few kilometres far from the city's picturesque medieval village, are hosted inside the traditional ancient farms of the surrounding territory, and give guests the possibility to take advantage of modern comforts and excellent services and facilities. The local farm houses, which are hosted inside fully-renovated ancient rural complexes, gather comfortable and welcoming bedrooms, and fine restaurants which give guests the possibility to taste traditional specialities from Ceglie.
The old town is dominated by the impressive fifteenth-century Ducal Castle, which boasts Norman origins. The fortress, which was enlarged and embellished during the Angevin period, is characterized by an impressive 34-metre-high merloned tower and a monumental gate, which is surmounted by a round arch and embellished by a rough rustication.
The entrance gate of the Ducal Castle is faced by the Collegiate Church of Assunta, which was built in 1521. The building, which was subsequently enlarged in 1786 according to the canons of the Baroque architectural style, boasts a sumptuous facade which is divided into two storeys: both of them are surmounted by a triangular pediment and a huge majolica-tiled dome.
Piazza Plebiscito, which extends just in the heart of the city centre, is commanded by the nineteenth-century Clock Tower. The city's Neoclassical Civic Tower is characterized by four quadrants, and marks the watershed between the medieval village and the nineteenth-century old town.
The lovers of speleology won't miss the opportunity to visit the Caves of Montevicoli, which develops on the top of the homonymous hill that rises 1,5 kilometres far from the city centre. At Christmas, the cave's impressive stalactites and stalagmites provide an original backdrop for a wonderful artistic nativity scene.
