Situated in the province of Trento, in a privileged panoramic position overlooking Val di Fiemme, Cavalese is the administrative and cultural centre of the valley. The town, which developed as a craft centre during the MIddle Ages, still relies on the craft production of wooden, marble and iron items, as well as on tourism and its ancillary branches.

A privileged holiday destination since the XVI century, it once welcomed noble families and bishops and still relies heavily on tourism. The modern ski-lift facilities of Cavalese's city centre lead to Alpe Cermis ski district, while on the slopes of the mountains is a large cross-country trail where a popular cross-country ski race is normally held.
Cavalese's city centre is divided into an upper area, which is scattered with elegant aristocratic residences which were commissioned by noble families from Trentino, and a lower section, which is older and peppered with interesting historical sights, such as the Parish Church of St. Maria Assunta, which is surrounded by the large Parco della Pieve.
The most representative landmark of the upper part is the medieval Bishop's Palace, the current seat of the so-called Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme (Fiemme's Community), whose interior cherishes the local archives, picture gallery and museum. Next to the palace is the nineteenth-century Civic Tower.  Not to be missed is the rich collection of Cavalese' s Centre of Contemporary Art.
