Visiting Castelnuovo Magra

Castelnuovo Magra, an ancient village of the province of La Spezia, nestles on the slopes of Mount Bastione, a gentle hill that dominates the lush valley of the river Magra. This charming centre, that is situated south-east of the provincial capital and develops along the border with the Tuscan province of Massa Carrara, boasts breathtaking views over the enchanting Tyrrhenian Coast and the lush Val di Vara.

Castelnuovo Magra's welcoming and comfortable hotels make the ideal base for reaching the enchanting Cinque Terre and the compelling beaches of the Ligurian coastline. The city's family-run guest houses gather fine bedrooms furnished with style and provided with any comfort. The local bed and breakfasts, that distribute amidst the sweet hills of the lush Val di Magra, are the ideal accommodation facilities for those interested in enjoying the cultural traditions, environmental beauties and food and wine specialities of both Tuscany and Liguria.

The city's most representative architectural landmark is the Castle of Luni's Bishops, that was erected during the second half of the XIII century. This imposing fortress still retains its high Turris Magna, the ancient 80-metre-high merloned donjon, and a small circular tower.
The oldest part of the city, the so-called “Borghetto”, is dominated by the Bianchi Oratory, that was built around the end of the XVI century. This sumptuous Renaissance building cherishes precious wooden choir stalls dating back to the eighteenth century, as well as some beautiful XVIII-century processional lanterns. The late-Renaissance-Baroque Church of St. Maria Maddalena was erected in the XVII century. This monumental parish church cherishes precious paintings and sculptures, such as the famous “Calvary”, that was attributed to the famous Flemish artist Pieter Bruegel the Younger.
The village abounds in splendid civic buildings that were realized between the XVII and the XVIII century. Not to be missed is the eighteenth-century Palazzo Amati Ingolotti Cornelio, that is now the seat of the local Municipality. Its interior gathers splendid XIX-century frescoes, and is embellished by a fascinating roof garden.
The cellars of the historical Town Hall are home to the important Public Wine Shop of Liguria and Lunigiana, that aims at promoting the most important local staples and wine of the surrounding area, such as the famous Vermentino dei Colli di Luni.
