Castellaro, a small municipality of the province of Imperia, nestles on the slopes of Mount Sette Fontane, and extends across the enchanting valley of the stream Argentina. Castellaro's most representative monument is the XVII-century Sanctuary of Nostra Signora di Lampedusa, that rises one kilometre far from the city centre. This imposing circular building can be reached through a charming path dotted with fifteen votive shrines depicting the mysteries of Via Crucis. Other sacred buildings worthy of mention are the parish church of St. Pietro in Vincoli (1619), whose interior cherishes a precious fifteenth-century tabernacle realized by the famous sculptor from Genoa Gaggini, and the Oratory of Assunta (1679), that contains a prestigious wooden statue sculpted by Anton Maria Maragliano.
The ancient village is dominated by the impressive Feudal Castle. Today, only a semi-circular tower and its machicolations can still be seen. In front of the tower is the Palace of Gentile Family, that was commissioned by the members of the noble family and is now owned by the local Municipality. The central Piazza Ruffini is dominated by the majestic neo-Gothic Arnaldi Castle, that was erected in the XIX century together with its two merloned side towers.
