Castelfranco Emilia, a small municipality of the province of Modena, is situated just in the heart of the Po Valley, and develops along the famous Via Aemilia, that was built by the Romans many years ago. The municipal territory, that is crossed by plenty of waterways and resurgences, develops halfway between Bologna and Modena. The glorious surrounding countryside is dotted with thick woods and lush cultivated fields.

The city's oldest religious building is the Church of St. Maria Assunta, that was erected along the Via Aemilia between 1226 and 1232. The building, that was repeatedly restored over the course of the centuries, contains a precious painting depicting the Assumption of the Virgin Mary that was realized in 1627 by the famous artist Guido Reni from Bologna.
Not to be missed are the impressive remains of the ancient City's Fortress, that was commissioned by Pope Urban VIII and built  between 1628 and 1634 to suit defensive purposes. The great entrance gate, the rampart and part of the walls are still visible and open to the general public
Another site worthy of mention is the splendid Villa Sorra, which is surrounded by fascinating rural settings of great historic, cultural and naturalistic value. The villa, that is one of the most important buildings in the province of Modena,  is surrounded by a lush park, and boasts a splendid nineteenth-century “romantic” garden of rare beauty.
The lovers of history and art won't miss the opportunity to visit Mulino Forlani, that was commissioned by Bologna's municipality in 1234. They will have the possibility to admire ancient instruments and tools, as well as to enjoy the splendid Art-nouveau decorations of the walls and vaults of the upper rooms.
