Visiting Castel Giorgio
Castel Giorgio, a lovely municipality of the province of Terni, is a highly appreciated tourist centre. Its city centre develops on the border between Umbria and Latium, and extends a short distance from both Lake Bolsena and Alfina Plateau. It boasts breathtaking views over the underlying thick woods, picturesque villages and imposing medieval castles.
Hotels and guest houses in Castel Giorgio are the ideal accommodation facilities for the lovers of active holidays and outdoor activities. The local farm houses make the ideal base for undertaking exciting excursions across the surrounding area, as well as for admiring precious historical finds and remains dating back to the V and VI centuries, when Umbrians and Etruscans settled here. All year round, the local inns give gourmets and the lovers of food and wine tourism the possibility to taste ecellent local staples from the province of Terni.
Its privileged position makes Castel Giorgio the ideal holiday destination for the lovers of naturalistic excursions. One part of this lovely centre, that develops on the border between Umbria and Latium, is occupied by the famous Lake Bolsena, while the north-western side is dominated by the impressive profile of Mount Amiata, crossed by the stream Romealla and by its spectacular waterfalls and surrounded by low volcanic stone reliefs.
Like most other Umbrian towns, Castel Giorgio is scattered with precious remains belonging to ancient Etruscan necropolises and Roman villas, as well as with important finds and remains dating back to the Middle Ages and the following centuries. 3 kilometres far from the city centre is Montalfina Castle, an important example of Medieval defensive structure that was built in the year 1000 and then subsequently remodelled over the course of the Renaissance Period. Not to be missed is the Renaissance Palazzo di Montiolo too, that was commissioned by a noble man from Orvieto and erected along the ancient Via Traiana, that now runs parallel to the municipal pinewood forest. No remains have survived of the original castle, that was commissioned by the Bishop of Orvieto Giorgio della Rovere, who is said to have founded the city in 1477. The castle, that was erected in the city centre and then destroyed by terrible wars and earthquakes, was replaced by the Bishop's Palace in 1620, that still stands next to the parish church of Castel Giorgio.
