Casamicciola Terme, a small municipality of Ischia, boasts a long tradition of hospitality. Casamicciola's first spa establishment  was founded in 1610: it was called Pio Monte della Misericordia and was a public clinic for all citizens from Naples. Ischia's waters have been studied since the Middle Ages. The historical building of the first spa establishment was built around the springs of the so-called Gurgitello Waters. In 1883 it was destroyed by a tremendous earthquake, and was subsequently rebuilt a short distance from the sea and harbour. Apart from Gurgitello, other famous thermal springs are Il Cotto, La Rita and Il Castiglione o Bagnitiello, whose waters flow few metres far from the sea.
