Casal Velino is situated within a short driving distance from the archaeological area of the ancient city of Elea Velia, which was founded by the Focesi in 540 B. C. and is the most representative evidence of Greek settlement in Italy. During its golden age, Elea Velia was the native town of three of the best known philosophers in the world: Senofane of Colofone, Parmenide and Zenone. They were the members of the so-called Scuola Eleatica, whose name drew inspiration from that of Elea Velia.
Excavations in Elea Velia are subdivided into different areas: the low city, the acropolis, the so-called castelluccio, the spas and the necropolis. The most interesting architectures are the ones of the so-called Porta Rosa, which rises along the street which connects the city with the sea, those of the amphitheatre and those of the Sanctuary of Poseidon Asphaleios. During the Middle Ages, the top of the ancient acropolis was dominated by a majestic sighting tower, which still features original shapes and patterns.
