Visiting Carpenedolo

Situated in the province of Brescia, Carpenedolo is a small municipality which extends along the left banks of the river Chiese, just in the heart of the south-eastern plain of the provincial capital. The thriving farming activities which have developed here over the course of the centuries are still regarded to be the most important economic resources of the city, which gathers large fertile territories which are distributed around the city centre and along the course of the river Chiese.

Plenty of charming footpaths and naturalistic itineraries, utmost tranquillity, outstanding monuments of great artistic and historical value, a lively cultural life and plenty of interesting artistic initiatives, sporting events and folk traditions attract large numbers of tourists who stay at local accommodation facilities. Comfortable guesthouses and holiday farms are situated amidst lush meadows and thick woods and dominated by the sweet hills of the surrounding area. The proximity with the popular resort of Desenzano del Garda, which is situated along the shores of the homonymous lake, gives those staying at a hotel in Carpenedolo the possibility to take advantage of the modern services and facilities offered by the nearby lakeside resort, which is situated only 15 kilometres far from it.

Carpenedolo is the ideal holiday destination for those looking for utmost relax and a closer touch with nature. The river Chiese is flanked by two exciting paths to be crossed both on foot and by bike: one leads to Montichiari, which is situated north of Carpenedolo, while the latter leads to the southern bridge of Mezzane. Both itineraries cross the glorious countryside of the surrounding area, as well as thick woods of willow trees, poplars and elms, which provide a rich habitat for many species of local animals and birds, the latter nesting among the branches of high willow trees. Walking down the course of Fossa Magna, a tributary of the river Chiese which crosses Carpenedolo's city centre, visitors will have the opportunity to admire an ancient mill, which bears witness to the crafts activities which were carried out here in the past centuries.
Carpenedolo's original urban settlement was founded in the V-VI century AD around Pieve di Teglie, which is now known as the Parish Church of St. Maria in Carpino. This is one of the city's major tourist attractions, since it boasts an impressive structure which was largely built of Botticino stone and is embellished by sumptuous fifteenth-century frescoes.
Another popular cultural mecca is the Sanctuary of St. Maria del Castello, which was designed by the architect G. B. Marchetti in the XVII century. Apart from the elegant church which cherishes important paintings by Maffei and harmonious frescoes, the top of the outer staircase gives tourists the possibility to enjoy sweeping views of the underlying landscape.
The outskirts of the city hides another important sacred building, the church of St. Pietro, which dates back to 974, as evidenced by an ancient tombstone. Both the outer structure and the interiors, which cherish precious frescoes dating back to '400, are a fascinating chequerboard of different styles and architectural patterns.
Among the most important civic buildings, not to be missed are the so-called Torre Vecchia (Old Tower), a merloned tower which rises on the top of the nearby Mount Rocchetta, which is said to have hosted an ancient castle which no longer exists, Torre Nuova (New Tower), the high Baroque bell tower which dominates Carpenedolo's city centre, the sixteenth-century Palazzo Tommaso Caprioli, the current seat of Palazzo della Cultura, and Palazzo Deodato Laffranchi, which had hosted the hospital since 1635 and is now the seat of the local rest home and the venue for absorbing cultural events.
