Visiting Carovigno

The small municipality of Carovigno, which is situated in the province of Brindisi, rises on the top of a sweet hill which slopes down to the Adriatic Sea halfway between Itria Valley and the northern part of the Salentine Peninsula.
The ancient "la Terra" village, which rises on the top of the hill, boasts breathtaking views over the Adriatic Coast, where long beaches and scrub-covered dunes are interspersed with sandy coves and high cliffs.

Hotels in Carovigno, which are situated a short distance from the sea, are furnished with style and provided with comfortable, spacious and well-lit bedrooms overlooking the beach. The local guest houses, which are idyllically set just in the heart of the glorious surrounding countryside, give guests the possibility to discover genuine traditions and ancient usages and customs, and make the ideal base for undertaking pleasant excursions across the outstanding natural beauties and fascinating artistic sites of the region. Those interested in spending pleasant holidays here based on the utmost relax will have the possibility to to stay at the local farm houses, which are harmoniously integrated with the lush surrounding landscape.

Carovigno's ancient origins are evidenced by the famous Messapic Wall, which is made up of square-shaped megalithic blocks which can be still observed. The old town is dominated by the impressive Dentice di Frasso Castle, which was erected between the XIV and the XV century. The fortress, which rises in the highest point of the city, features a triangular structure, whose three vertexes are occupied by a square, a circular and an almond-shaped tower.
A short distance from the city centre is the Greek-Byzantine Sanctuary of St. Maria Belvedere. Its cave cherishes the precious fresco depicting Madonna and Child, which dates back to the XIV century. The cult of Madonna del Belvedere is linked with the ancient ritual of the so-called Nzegna (flag), which takes place at Easter and attract large numbers of tourists and curious people.
The lovers of nature won't miss the opportunity to visit Torre Guaceto Natural Reserve. This lush protected area is a natural and marine reserve which develops along the Adriatic Coast of the high Salentine peninsula. Is name derives from the homonymous XVI-century tower which was once built for protection against Saracen raids.
