Visiting Capaccio

Capaccio, a small municipality of the province of Salerno, develops on the slopes of the mountains which punctuate the National Park of Cilento and Vallo di Diano. Situated a short distance from the coastline, Capaccio is one of the closest cities to the archaeological excavations of the ancient city of Paestum. Those who spend their holidays in Capaccio will have the possibility to enjoy both the sea and the mountains, and to undertake interesting cultural tours and guided visits to the local archaeological complex.

Accommodation facilities in Capaccio have developed considerable expertise in the field of tourism and hospitalty, and welcome guests with the utmost warmth, courtesy and kindness. Those who stay at guest houses, residences or farm houses in Capaccio will have the possibility to enjoy the warm hospitality and genuine traditions of Campania and its people.

Capaccio's city centre boasts breathtaking views over outstanding natural landscapes, and gives visitors the possibility to enjoy sweeping views over both the sea and the green profiles of the impressive Cilento mountains. A charming local hill is topped by the impressive ruins of the ancient Capaccio, which was destroyed by Frederick II in 1248. The same hill also hosts the beautiful Sanctuary of St. Maria del Granato, which was erected in the XII century but then completely restored in 1708. Its interior cherishes precious medieval artifacts of great value.
Capaccio is crossed by plenty of fascinating footpaths which lead up to the mountains of the National Park: the local tourist offices give visitors the possibility to gain detailed information on the most beautiful itineraries and excursions of the surrounding area. Apart from gathering plenty of unspoiled natural beauties, Capaccio also boasts the wonderful archaeological area of Paestum.
A tour of Paestum gives visitors the possibility to enjoy deep feelings and intense emotions. Surrounded by well-preserved city walls, the city gathers plenty of majestic architectures: its temples, for example, are the second most important in the world after those of Athens. Three of them have Greek origins (Doric style), while one dates back to the Roman Age. Paestum's excavations give people the possibility to gain precious information on the different historical phases of the urban development: the city was founded by Greek colons from Sibari and was able to retain its original splendour for the whole Roman Age.
Paestum's best-preserved and most  famous building is the IV-century Neptune's Temple, which is depicted by plenty of famous postcards. Other attractions worthy of note are the Forum, some residential areas, the amphitheatre, the underground sacellum and the ruins of some important places of worship. Not to be missed are the National Archaeological Museum and the Tower of Paestum, which is situated further from the archaeological excavations.
