Visiting Canosa Di Puglia

The small municipality of Canosa di Puglia, which is situated in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani, nestles on the north-western slopes of the Murge plateau, along the right banks of the river Ofanto. It overlooks a vast territory, which develops from the basin of the river Ofanto up to the large plain of the so-called Tavoliere delle Puglie and the Adriatic Coast.

Situated amidst sumptuous sacred buildings, impressive civic palaces and outstanding natural beauties, the well-kept hotels of Canosa di Puglia give guests the possibility to spend pleasant holidays here while taking advantage of high-quality services and facilities.
Guest houses in Canosa di Puglia, which are all furnished with style, make the ideal base for visiting the important archaeological sites of the surrounding area. The city's ancient rural farms, which have recently been restored, now host charming farm houses, which give both gourmets and the lovers of nature the possibility to spend pleasant holidays based on the utmost rest and relaxation.

Canosa is the most important archaeological area of Apulia, a wonderful open-air museum which cherishes impressive finds and remains. Tourists will have the opportunity to discover the five thousand-year-long history of the city walking along its streets or following four targeted archaeological itineraries.
The “Dauno” itinerary is scattered with impressive hypogea, that is to say fascinating underground tombs. The most important ones are the famous Lagrasta Hypogea and the Tomba degli Ori.
The “Imperial Roman” itinerary is peppered with outstanding monuments, such as the Roman Bridge over the river Ofanto, which is characterized by five arches supported by four spire-shaped pillars, and the remains of the Temple of Giove Toro, an hexastyle peripteral which is embellished by ten columns on each long side.
The pride of the “early Christian” itinerary is the Basilica of St. Leucio, which is one of the major examples of early Christian architecture in Apulia. The pagan temple of Minerva was turned into a Christian Basilica between the IV and the V century A.D; it is embellished by Doric and Ionic columns, carved capitals and polychromatic mosaics.
The “Byzantine-Medieval” itinerary is commanded by the Cathedral of St. Sabino, which was erected around 1080 to celebrate a local bishop who lived here in the VI century. The basilica, which has a Latin cross, is surmounted by five ribbed vaults; its apse and transept were realized according to the canons of the Romanesque-Byzantine architectural style.
