Visiting Cannole
Cannole is a small Salentine municipality situated 29 kilometres far from Lecce. Its old town rises on the top of a charming plateau which is situated 100 metres above sea level, it is surrounded by the beautiful Lakes Alimini and is situated a short distance from the enchanting city of Otranto.
Its proximity with the coastline and the outstanding historic-artistic beauties of its city centre make Cannole an appreciated holiday destination. Those staying at the comfortable hotels and guesthouses of the city centre or at charming holiday farms will have the opportunity to visit a well-preserved historical village which is not affected by mass tourism, where life revolves around genuine traditions and local usages and customs.
The city's most representative landmarks are the ancient rural houses which surround the city centre. The most famous one is Masseria Torcito, a XVII-century complex dominated by an impressive tower which is the complex's most ancient part. Around the building is a protected natural area which cherishes plenty of interesting historical finds, such as the remains of an ancient oil mill, an imposing tower, some tombs and an eigtheenth-century small church. Not to be missed is the XVIII-century Anfiano complex, which was erected over the remains of an ancient medieval manor house and an even older Roman villa, as evidenced by the numerous finds which were unearthed in the surrounding area.
Among the city's most important sacred builldings are the church of Madonna di Costantinopoli, which is situated just outside the city centre along the road which leads to Otranto, and the so-called chiesa Madre, which was realized between the XVI and the XVII century. They were both largerly built of Lecce's typical white stone.
The sixteenth-century Castle of Cannole was erected to suit defensive purposes but was subsequently turned into an elegant aristocratic residence. This impressive building is surrounded by a lush garden which is dominated by a majestic Baroque fountain.
