Visiting Cannara

Cannara, a small municipality of the province of Perugia, extends along the banks of the river Topino, just in the heart of Umbria's largest plain. It develops across an ancient Roman territory which was once called Lacus Umber because of the presence of numerous cane thickets, which are the typical vegetation of marshlands.
Founded over the remains of an ancient settlement of the Umbri, the ancient Castrum Canarii achieved the utmost splendour in the XII-XIII centuries, as evidenced by the medieval layout of its old town.

Those who decide to spend some days in this cosy resort, which is scattered with impressive monuments and livened up by numerous festivals and cultural initiatives, will have the possibility to choose among a dazzling array of accommodation facilities. The lovers of open-air holidays will have the opportunity to stay at the charming farmhouses of Cannara and the surrounding area, as well as to spend some days at Cannara's welcoming family hotels. Tourists will have the opportunity to enjoy the warm hospitality and tasty traditional specialities offered by every hotel in Cannara.

The city's most representative landmarks are the late-Romanesque Church of St. Biagio and the Church of St. Matteo, whose interior cherishes a precious painting by Niccolò Alunno. Most sacred buildings in Cannara are linked with St. Francis of Assisi, such as the Church of Buona Morte, where the saint is said to have given his first suit to the Secular Third Order, and the shrine of Piandarca, which was erected in the legendary place where St. Francis is said to have given the famous sermon to the birds.
Both tourists and local inhabitants are attracted by Cannaras' lively food and wine fairs and religious festivals. The most famous event is the Festival of St. Biagio, which takes place every year on February 3. Local inhabitants perform plenty of funny games, such as the famous “Ruzzolone”, a traditional race dating back to the XVI century during which they roll whole cheeses along the old town.
Not to be missed is the so-called Infiorata, which takes place the day after the celebration of Corpus Domini, during which the streets of the city are covered with enchanting floral patterns. Another popular trade fair is the so-called Onion Festival, which gives participants the possibility to taste the best recipes prepared with the famous Cannara onion while sipping the local Vernaccia wine, which was appointed D.O.C. wine in 2009.
