Situated just in the heart of central Sicily, Caltagirone is one of the westernmost cities of the province of Catania. Its territory develops over the top of three hills, that form a natural amphitheatre between Mounts Iblei and Mounts Erei.

The city's two major arterial routes merge in the central Piazza del Municipio, that is commanded by Palazzo Senatorio and Palazzo del Municipio. The nearby Piazza Umberto I is home to the eighteenth-century Duomo of St. Giuliano and Corte Capitaniale, an original single story building featuring beautiful portals and windows.
Caltagirone's most representative symbol is its spectacular Stairway of 142 steps. It was realized in 1600 by Giuseppe Giacalone, and steps were embellished by splendid majolica tiles in 1954.
A short distance from the city centre is the beautiful monumental cemetery, the so-called Paradise Cemetery. This ancient complex, that was appointed national monument in 1931, is characterized by beautiful ogival arches and slender columns. The same area also hosts some beautiful aristocratic chapels dating back to the early Twentieth century.
