Butera, a small municipality of the province of Caltanissetta, is situated south of the provincial capital, and develops on the top of a sweet hill that rises 402 metres above sea level. The hilly landscapes of the hinterland are dramatically offset  by the flat areas that extend along the coastline.

Situated on the top of a fascinating rock spur overlooking the sea, the fifteenth-century Falconara Castle or Arab-Norman Castle dominates the old town. It still retains some architectural elements belonging to the original structure, such as the tower, the merloned walls, some double lancet windows, the entrance arch and the ogival portal. Visitors will have the opportunity to visit three floors of the castle, that have recently been totally restored. A short distance from the castle is the beautiful Church of St. Francesco, whose interior cherishes precious pictures and a painted cross of great value.
Piazza Duomo hosts the splendid Chiesa Madre of St. Tommaso, whose high altar cherishes the famous Madonna degli Angeli by Filippo Paladino. The eighteenth-century Sanctuary of St. Rocco cherishes the precious statue of the city's patron saint. It has an apsidal shape, and its single nave is surmounted by a huge vault. The inner walls are decorated with precious stuccoes and paintings depicting the life of St. Rocco. Butero is an important archaeological area for those interested in deepening their knowledge of the ancient history of central and southern Sicily.
