Some churches in Busto Arsizio were built before the year 1000. The most representative one is the Basilica of St. John the Baptist, whose current facade was rebuilt by Domenico Valmagini between 1699 and 1701. The outer structure is embellished by a beautiful prothyrum surmounted by an arched gable, Ionic pilasters, statues and bas reliefs and huge bronze and copper doors. Another religious building worthy of mention is the Church of St. Michele Arcangelo, that is situated in the northernmost part of the historical village and is flanked by a X-century bell tower, the oldest architectural element in the city. Not to be missed are the church of St. Rocco and the Church of Madonna del Prato, the latter being built over the remains of an ancient sixteenth-century shrine and then restored around the end of 1700 by Biagio Bellotti. Via Solferino is scattered with interesting monuments and buildings dating back to the early Middle Ages, some of which were then remodelled over the course of the eighteenth and nineteenth century. Other buildings worthy of note are Villa Ottolini – Tosi, that resembles an ancient medieval castle, Villa Ottolini – Tovaglieri, that is embellished by splendid wrought iron decorations, and the sumptuous Art-nouveau Villa Leone. The central Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II is dominated by Palazzo Mariani – Cicogna, that is now the seat of the Municipal Library and the Musueum of the Civic Art Collections.
