Visiting Brunate
Situated in the province of Como, Brunate is an enchanting village which nestles on the slopes of the Lombard Prealps southwest of the so-called Triangolo Lariano. It is also known as “Balcony of the Alps”, since its highest point overlooks the whole Alpine range, from the Po Valley up to the first Appenine heights. Visitors will have the opportunity to take the exciting funicular railway which connects Brunate with Como in seven minutes.
Brunate's charming guest houses, which nestle just in the heart of lush parks and unspoiled green areas, are the ideal accommodation facilities for those looking for utmost peace and relax, while those interested in exploring fascinating historical and cultural itineraries will have the possibility to stay at the comfortable hotels of the city centre, which are situated a short distance from the city's major attractions and highlights. The comfortable residences which punctuate the valley are situated a short distance from the Plateau and give guests the possibility to explore the enchanting footpaths which lead to the nearby Mount Piatto. These fascinating paths are dotted with intimate shelters, which give guests the possibility to rest while admiring the lush surrounding countryside and thick woods of ash trees, maple trees, birches, oak-trees, chestnut trees and beech-trees.
Splendid Art-Nouveau villas, sumptuous palaces and impressive stone gates dominate Brunate's picturesque streets and the steep staircases of the old town. Not to be missed are the fascinating historical courtyards which punctuate the whole municipal territory, such as the Courtyard of the Castle and the Courtyard of the Jewish. The city's lovely old town also hosts the small church of Madonna di Pompei. The facing square is dominated by the local parish church, which is named after St. Andrew Apostle, Brunate's patron saint. Despite this being a recently renovated building, which was totally remodelled in the first two decades of the XX century with the realization of a new facade, its origins date back to the fourteenth century. At the end of the XVII century, a noble family of painters from Como, Recchi Family, decorated the inner walls with sumptuous frescoes depicting the most important saints of the city.
Not to be missed are the Church of Sacro Cuore di Gesù and the adjoining bell tower, which are situated just in the heart of the city's lushest area, Piani di Brunate.
The local footpaths and mule tracks are peppered with outstanding geological finds. The most interesting ones are Pietra di Nairola, a huge boulder which rises on the top of a similar rock formation, and Sasso del Lupo, an enormous erratic block whose name derives from the ancient legend according to which the underlying cave appeared to be inhabited by a wolf. Even the Voltiano Lighthouse is well worth a visit. Designed according to the plans by the engineer Gabriele Giussani, it was erected in 1927 to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the death of Alessandro Volta. 143 steep stairs lead to the top of the imposing building, which offers breathtaking views over the impressive profile of the western Alps and Monte Rosa.
