Visiting Brugnato

Brugnato, a small municipality of the province of La Spezia, is idyllically set just in the heart of the lush valley of the river Vara, and nestles on the slopes of the Ligurian Apennines. This charming centre, that has recently been declared one of the “most beautiful Ligurian villages in Italy”, extends across the central part of the province, and develops a short distance from the Fluvial Park of the River Magra.

Hotels in Brugnato, that belong to any price category, are situated just in the heart of the old town, and distribute a short distance from the city's major attractions and highlights. Brugnato's welcoming guest houses are the ideal accommodation facilities for both couples, families and large groups of friends. The city's farm houses and bed and breakfasts, that distribute along the course of the local streams and the river Vara, make the ideal base for exploring the Ligurian hinterland and performing canyoning and rafting.

The ancient village is dominated by the Co-cathedral of St. Pietro, Lorenzo and Colombano, that was erected by Benedictine monks around the half of the XII century. The building, that is commanded by an imposing bell tower, has two naves and is embellished by splendid pointed arches supported by huge columns. The major nave hosts an ancient font, while the apse, that was largely made of stone, still retains the remains of an ancient Baroque altar and those of three precious stone masks.
One of the city's most representative civic buidlings is the Bishop's Palace, that was erected in 1133 over the remains of the ancient abbey of St. Colombano and now rises next to the cathedral. Its interior is home to the interesting Diocesan Museum, that is subdivided into an archaeological section, a diocesan section and a large exhibition hall gathering ancient clothes, manuscripts and prints.
The banks of the river Vara still host the remains of an ancient XII-century bridge that once connected the municipalities of the hinterland, that developed around the slopes of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, with the coastal centres of the Eastern Ligurian Riviera.
Bugnato's most important artistic-religious event, that attracts large numbers of visitors every year, is the famous Corpus Domini Infiorata. On the occasion of this solemnity, the streets of the city are fully carpeted with flowers that are set in such a way to depict important sacred episodes and scenes.
