Visiting Brisighella
Brisighella, a small municipality of the province of Ravenna, nestles on the slopes of three impressive rock pinnacles of the Tuscan-Emilian Appenine, and develops along the left banks of the river Lamone. Its territory extends across the south-western part of the province, along the road that connects Ravenna with Florence, and is characterized by the presence of numerous chalk pits and hot springs.
Brisighella's enchanting naturalistic beauties and precious hot springs make it a highly appreciated holiday destination. It is scattered with elegant hotels, that distribute both in the city centre and along the banks of the river Lamone, welcoming family-run guest houses and charming farm houses, that are situated just in the heart of enchanting landscapes and make the ideal base for undertaking exciting naturalistic excursions across the surrounding territory. Both families with children and those looking for intimate locations will have the possibility to stay at the fascinating bed and breakfasts of the surrounding area.
The three impressive hills that dominate Brisighella are topped by the Manfrediana Fortress (1310), a prestigious example of medieval castle provided with cylindrical towers, like the sixteenth-century Torrione Veneziano, the Clock Tower (1290), an ancient fortress that is now the seat of the Museum of Time, and the eighteenth-century Sanctuary of Monticino.
One of the most beautiful sacred buildings of the city is the Parish Church of St. Giovanni in Ottavo or Tho, that was erected around the V century. This church, whose name derives from the fact it was built along the ancient Via Faentina, eight miles far from Via Aemilia, was remodelled and enlarged between the XI and the XII centuries. Both sides of this sumptuous Romanesque building are decorated with small arches, while the facade is embellished by a sober rose window. Not to be missed is the seventeenth-century Collegiate Church of St. Michele Arcangelo, the city's patron saint. The interior of this building, that was inaugurated in 1700, cherishes precious masterpieces, such as the neo-Baroque altar in polychrome scagliola, the precious XVI-century wood crucifix and the wonderful painting depicting the “Adoration of the Magi", that was realized in 1515 by Marco Palmezzano from Forlì.
The narrow streets and lanes of the ancient village are cut by a charming XII-century covered road, the so-called Via degli Asini. This fascinating elevated road, that is embellished by several arches of various size, was originally built to suit defensive purposes, and has only recently been turned into an animal shelter.
The lovers of speleology won't miss the opportunity to visit the famous Cave of Tanaccia, that is situated along the so-called Chalk Path of Romagna Apennines. This fascinating complex gathers spectacular stalactites and stalagmites, as well as narrow tunnels, galleries and impressive chalk formations.
