Visiting Brentonico
Brentonico is a small municipality situated south of the province of Trento, just in the heart of a beautiful plateau overlooking Sorna Valley. Brentonico and the surrounding landscape are crowned by the peaks of Mount Baldo, Mount Altissimo di Nago, Colma di Vignola and Pravecchio.
Made up of several hamlets, Brentonico and its municipal territory abound in comfortable accommodation facilities and tourist services, such as hotels situated a short distance from the main slopes of San Valentino and the comfortable guesthouses of the old town, the latter gathering outstanding monuments and artworks. The area is also scattered with intimate shelters, which are situated along the paths of Polsa and San Giacomo, and modern residences which give families with children and large groups of friends the possibility to spend pleasant holidays here at reasonable prices.
Brentonico's old town is characterized by a peculiar pre-medieval town layout. The city centre is divided into five districts which are peppered with traditional workshops selling local handicrafts, such as wooden, stone and marble items. The buildings of the city centre mirror the ability of local stonecutters. Among these, the bell tower of the Baroque church of St. Rocco, the marble altars cherished by this church itself and the church of St. Pietro and Paolo, and the entrance gates of casa Balista and casa Bais. The nearby hamlet of Castione, with its ancient stone houses, impressive castle and marble quarries, is an interesting destination for those interested in discovering the artistic past of these small centres (note the house of Benedetti sculptors). Not to be missed are Sorne, which was built as a medieval fortress on the top of an impressive rock spur, Prada, where the facades of some churches and ancient houses are ornated with frescos of great value, and the small centre of Saccone, which offers sweeping views of Adige Valley.
The most appreciated tourist destinations are Polsa, which makes the ideal base for exploring charming paths and itineraries, San Giacomo, which boasts an ancient Alpine tradition and is provided with well-equipped cross-country trails, and San Valentino, the point of departure of modern ski-lift facilities which lead to Mount Baldo.
