Visiting Borrello

Borrello, a tiny village of the province of Chieti, rises 804 metres above sea level, and is part of the local Comunità Montana Medio Sangro. It is situated a short distance from Rio Verde waterfalls and the famous ski resort of Capracotta.

The city centre gathers a wide range of family-run hotels and guest houses. Borrello's sweet panoramic hills host numerous farmhouses, which are the ideal accommodation facilities for families with children. The surrounding area is punctuacted with intimate bed and breakfasts, while the highest mountaintops are peppered with charming huts and shelters.

Borrello's village, which boasts ancient origins, retains only few remains of the original settlement, which was gradually destroyed during the wars of the XX century. One of the most important evidences of the past is Palazzo Baronale, which rises on the top of the highest part of the city. It is now the seat of the Town Hall and the Museum of the Peasant Society.
A short distance from it is the famous Clock Tower, which was realized during the Middle Ages. Not to be missed is the church of St. Antonio da Padova, which was erected in the sixteenth century over the remains of a pre-exhisting church. It has recently been totally restored, and is embellished by some precious eighteenth-century paintings. Another site worthy of mention is Porta Saracina, which was once used as a lookout point to guard against Saracen attack.
