Visiting Bordighera
Bordighera, a small municipality of the province of Imperia, develops across the southernmost promontory of Liguria, Capo Sant'Ampelio, and extends along the coast of the Western Ligurian Riviera. Surrounded by lush green hills and a beguiling sea, it nestles on the slopes of the Maritime Alps, and is situated twenty kiloemtres far from the border with France.
Hotels in Bordighera, that are situated few metres far from the sea, gather wide and well-lit bedrooms provided with any comfort. The local guest houses, that distribute a short distance from the city centre, are the ideal accommodation facilities for those interested in exploring the old town and its precious artistic and architectural heritage. Bordighera's farm houses and bed and breakfasts give guests the possibility to spend pleasant holidays here based on nature, tradition and relax.
The city's most charming building is the seventeenth-century parish church of St. Maria Maddalena, that rises just in front Piazza del Popolo. This sumptuous Rococo building boasts a splendid facade decorated with marvellous stuccoes, and is flanked by a high bell tower surmounted by a majolica-tiled spire that once was a medieval watch-tower. Its interior cherishes one of Bordighera's most important artworks, the marble statue of Maddalena in Gloria (XVIII century) by Filippo Parodi.
Some of the most representative civic architectures are the Municipal Palace, that contains precious artworks realized by both Italian and foreign artists in the XIX and XX centuries, the Theatre of Palazzo del Parco, that is surrounded by a wonderful garden gathering lush palm trees and further interesting botanical species, and the twentieth-century Neoclassical Villa Margherita, that was the private residence of the first Queen of Italy, Margherita of Savoy.
One of Bordighera's major prides is its fascinating Lungomare Argentina, that was inaugurated in 1947 by Evita Perón, the wife of the Argentinian President. This promenade, that flanks the whole coastline, is the longest sea front of the Riviera, and it is embellished by flourishing gardens dotted with plenty of blooming succulents and colourful flowers. The long avenue also hosts a small pavilion, the so-called Music Stand, that is often the venue for amazing music concerts and events.
The lovers of nature and open-air activities will have the possibility to go for pleasant walks across the lush vegetation of the splendid Lowe and Moreno gardens, that were even celebrated by Monet, as well as to admire the precious collection of succulent plants cherished by Pallanca Exotic Garden.
