Bonassola, a small municipality of the province of La Spezia, develops just in the heart of a splendid gulf of the Eastern Ligurian Riviera, and is surrounded by sweet hills and lush terraced gardens. The gentle hill that rises just behind the village is dominated by the impressive remains of Bonassola Castle, that was built during the second half of the XVI century. This huge quandrangular building, that was subsequently turned into a cemetery in the nineteenth century, is surrounded by two high circular towers and embellished by a beautiful clock.
The Parish Church of St. Caterina, that was erected in the first half of the XVI century, is embellished by splendid sacred vessels and furnishings. This splendid building, that was totally remodelled during the Baroque Age, has a sober facade that is subdivided into three parts by splendid decorated pilasters, and is dominated by a huge stained glass window. Its interior contains precious paintings and sculptures of great value, as well as the prestigious processional chest of Our Lady of the Rosary, that was attributed to the famous sculptor from Genoa Anton Maria Maragliano. Not to be missed is the small Chapel of Madonna della Punta, that rises on the top of the impressiv cliffs that develop west of the Gulf of Bonassola. Commissioned by the members of Poggi Family around the end of the eighteenth century, it boasts sweeping views over the underlying glorious landscape that extends from Punta Mesco to the Promontory of Portofino.
Bonassola's territory is peppered with enchanting areas of great naturalistic beauty. One of these is the famous La Francesca Basin, that provides the ideal habitat for rare species of animals and plants.
